Congo City of Joy

Today I will focus on Eve Ensler, an advocate for the rights of women in the Congo. Ensler, who wrote the infamous “Vagina Monologues,” has campaigned against violence against women, even starting her own activist movement known as “V-Day.” V Day was created to help end of battery against women, humiliation, female genital mutilation, rape, incest, and sex slavery. Individual’s involved in the V-Day campaign might help produce benefit shows and performances, and also help educate others about violence against women. By collaborating with other organizations, V-day has created shelters for women in Iraq and Egypt, and more recently, a shelter in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This safe haven is known as the “City of Joy,” and is an extremely large step in promoting the wellbeing of suppressed women. The City of Joy opened in Bukavu, Congo, in February 2011 and will continue to help women who have been affected by sexual violence.
