Amnesty International is urging the investigation by the United Arab Emirates into the death of Lee Bradley Brown, 39, a man who was arrested at his luxury hotel, allegedly beaten and assaulted in police custody and who then died six days later while choking on his own vomit.
Amnesty is also urging that those responsible for his assault and death are "promptly brought to justice".
The police in Dubai recently told AI that his death was being thoroughly investigated by their Criminal Investigation Department to which AI responded with "We welcome the fact that an investigation is already underway but it is not sufficiently independent if, as it appears, one branch of the police is investigating alleged abuses by other police,” said Malcolm Smart.
He goes on to recommend that in order to retain public credibility that it is necessary that the people in charge of finding the truth are "fully independent" and have the "powers and resources to achieve this end".
