Yemen does not have an acceptable past record in human rights. Although there are some human rights laws in place, and they have accepted recommendations from the Human Rights Council in Geneva, they are not enforced. The government are military are corrupt. They are responsible for torture, random arrests of citizens, searches of homes, and unjust executions. Speech and religion are restricted. There is a lot of violence and discrimination against women.
More recently in Yemen there have been political protests against their current president (and US ally) Ali Abdullah Saleh. These protests are inspired by the protests in Egypt. Over 1,000 people have been protesting for five days now and the president has announced he will not be running for reelection.
