Why Human Rights Matter: Why Many Governments Think They Don't

Human rights matter because millions of people around the world have human rights issues and are being held down because of the lack of means that they are provided with. While many people imagine a stressful life is one without things that are not necessary for survival, there are millions more people without food, water and a decent, healthy and practical way of living. Many of these people are not even provided with the means to make a better living for themselves, which is one of the biggest reasons that human rights matter. Human Rights groups such as CARE and Amnesty International look at human rights, how to improve them and how to bring justice and "generate action to prevent and end grave abuses of human rights" (Amnesty.org). Human rights matter because everyone deserves the same opportunity to a healthy way of living that includes basic necessities for survival.

Groups like Amnesty International and CARE exist as Non-governmental Organizations because many States do not take proper action regarding their citizens rights. These NGO's are there to campaign as "individuals working in support of others who need protection and support" (Amnesty.org). Without many of these organizations, although the Universal Declaration of Human Rights exists, as such a large organization, it seems hard to prevent human rights violations before they actually take place, and instead use the Declaration as a way to punish and bring justice to violators of human rights. Although this is also good, more preventative measures should be put in place within States.

Although many governments acknowledge the need for human rights, many governments do not have the means to protect their citizens rights or enforce human rights violations. Because of this, they disregard their citizens basic needs for survival and a decent living.
