The Importance of Human Rights and why the Government Doesn't Care

Human rights are extremely important because they secure an individual’s basic liberties. In a world consumed with crime, these rights become a necessary means for survival and are ultimately intended to protect citizens from harm or wrongdoings. Human rights are crucial because they ensure that certain liberties as simple as free speech are provided to individuals across the universe. However, despite their importance, these rights are have not been successfully implemented and are often the center of conflict. These issues may result from a more passive role taken by the government, which in respect to human rights, acts as the ultimate authority. As a self-proclaimed amateur of the study of human rights, I am not exactly sure why the government has taken this role. However, I do believe that the conflict surrounding these rights might be too difficult for the government to control. War, rape, and murder (the list continues) all violate the concept of human rights and create an extremely extensive list of problems. The government might be overwhelmed, for lack of a better word, and may be relying on the idea that nothing can be done. Groups such as Amnesty International have taken a more active role, which may be influencing the government’s passive role as well. Unfortunately, problems surrounding higher bodies of power have existed throughout history and the government is arguably poor at prioritizing. Supporting human rights may not benefit the government directly, and hence, it becomes less of a priority. Also, strengthening human rights may include improving living conditions. This would take a large amount of funding, which the government may not be willing to provide.
